Before becoming the center for outdoor entertainment (legal or otherwise) in Greenwich Village, Washington Square Park was a cemetery, would you believe? Its linchpin, the triumphal Washington Arch, was designed by architect Stanford White to commemorate the centennial of George Washington’s inauguration in 1885.
